Aviation Secrets : Airplane contrails contributes more to Global Warming than we know!

-------

The aviation industry has no doubt helped international airline travel faster, safer, comfortable, and affordable. There has been plenty of avalable options to the public, from passenger airlines to private jets. But it has been criticized many times for its seemingly huge environmental impact, particularly from the airplanes' climate-warming carbon emissions.

But a recent study suggests that there is another byproduct of airplanes that has significant effect on the climate —the white contrails that the airplanes paint across the sky.

Airplanes produce long mesmerizing contrails during flight as they soar high in the thin, cold air. The water vapor simply quickly condenses around soot from the plane’s exhaust and then it freezes to form cirrus clouds. These white clouds formed can last for minutes or hours. These high-flying white contrails are too thin to reflect much sunlight, but ice crystals inside them can trap heat. Unlike low-level clouds that have a net cooling effect, these contrail-formed clouds warm the climate.

A 2011 study suggests that the net effect of these contrail clouds contributes more to atmospheric warming than all the carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by planes since the dawn of aviation. And those effects are predicted to get worse as air traffic—and the resulting cloud coverage—increases: Some estimates suggest global air traffic will quadruple by the year 2050.

One of the researchers from the 2011 study wanted to explore how contrail clouds could affect the climate in the future. Along with colleagues, atmospheric physicist Ulrike Burkhardt from the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR’s) Institute for Atmospheric Physics in Wessling created a new atmospheric model that—for the first time—gave contrail clouds their own category, separate from natural clouds. That allowed them to model particular qualities of the humanmade clouds that affected everything from their formation to how they interacted with the rest of the atmosphere.

The researchers modeled the effect of global contrail cloud coverage in 2006, a year for which they had accurate aviation data. Then, taking into account predictions for future air traffic and emissions, they modeled the effect of contrail clouds for 2050. They found a threefold increase in their warming effect over that time, they report this week in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics.

The study is one of the first to make a detailed prediction of how these special clouds affect the future climate, says DLR cloud physicist Bernd Kärcher, who was a co-author on the 2011 paper. He says the new cloud classification scheme was crucial to the model and its results.

The researchers looked at another scenario for 2050, one with a 50% reduction in airplane soot emissions. They found that such a reduction could lead to a 15% decrease in the contrail clouds’ atmospheric warming effect.

But little is known about the relationship between climate warming and cloud coverage, and how atmospheric warming affects temperatures on the surface. What researchers do know is that high levels of soot lead to more and longer-lived contrail cirrus clouds, which could alter weather and climate at the surface, Burkhardt says. However, she adds, even a 90% reduction in soot emissions with the help of cleaner aircraft fuels would fail to bring the cloud’s climate impact back to its 2006 levels.

A more likely scenario, Burkhardt says, is that levels of soot and contrail cirrus clouds will continue to rise. That’s because most aviation regulations and pollution-reduction plans fail to consider the climate impact from anything other than CO2 emissions. A United Nations scheme, for example, requires all signatory nations to keep their CO2 emissions under a certain level, and report them annually, but says nothing about the climate impact from contrails.

Burkhardt says that considering contrails in such schemes would be difficult, however, because climate impact varies based on weather, location, and time of day. One solution, Burkhardt says, is to reroute flights. However, such rerouting may force planes to burn more fuel and release more CO2. She says it would be better to find more efficient fuels that release less soot. But with the likely increase in air traffic, even that might not be enough.

Andrew Gettelman, a cloud physicist with the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, says contrail cirrus clouds are a complex problem, but that their warming effect is still small compared with the overall amounts of CO2 belched by society. “If all we had were contrails, there wouldn't be global warming.” But, he adds, it’s still important for the aviation industry to understand the science and “get their impact right.”

But some of the study the white contrails has an important role or an effect on the climate, it produce a long white contrails and disolved about minutes or hours and it is too thin to reflect much sunlight, but ice crystals inside them can trap heat
The study on 2011 the net effect of these contrail clouds canbe able to support the atmospheric warming rather than all the carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by planes and those effects it can be worse as air traffic and the other assume that the global air traffic will starts by the year of 2050. The researchers want to know what will be the effects of white contrails in the future thats why they invented a model to see what will happen on the cloud if it will affect everything and also the rest of the atmosphere. There are many more studies has been doing to make everythig safe and helpful in our climate based on weather, location, and time of day and how will it affect the temperature on the surface.

I really don’t have any idea about airplanes’ contrail causes climate change until I read the article about that. All I know is that cars are releasing carbon dioxide and humans are burning fossil fuels. I learned about how the contrail clouds in the airplanes contributes more to atmospheric warming rather than all the carbon dioxide in the cars because contrail clouds last for hours and its more dangerous to our atmosphere.

The article states that the airplane contrails does have a effect on our global warming because of its carbon and by getting rid of airplane contrails we can help to save the mother earth. The condensation trail left behind jet aircrafts are called contrails. Contrails form when hot humid air from jet exhaust mixes with environmental air of low vapor pressure and low temperature. The mixing is a result of turbulence generated by the engine exhaust. To get rid of this problem, airplanes would likely require a new technology to detect and relay airconditions so pilots knew where to fly to avoid contrails, the benefits could be huge.

  12. There are many things or causes of global warming and one of this is an aircraft contrails. Some of us might not thought about it but this affordable and comfortable transportation can be one of the cause of the global warming. I felt worried about the situation and based on what I read in the article, even though we decrease the soot emission by 90%, we will no longer bring back the previous condition. This shows that soot emission can be one of the causes but the major problem is still our bad activities towards the environment. This article also proves that if we didn't take action by now, we will no longer have a better future. We should also think of a better idea that can reduce the harmful effects to the environment because it will be hard to prevent something if it is already happening.

  13. An airplane or a private jet is one of the most recommendable transportation in terms of international travel but sad to say that even though aviation industry helped several people to travel in a safe, fast, and comfortable way makes it more harmful on our climate. Knowing the fact that the carbon emission (smoke) coming from the private jet has a great effect on global warming because the white contrails the jet engines produces can cause air pollution that can be three times larger in 2050. I've felt sad and disappointed at the same time because the carbon emmision has a great impact for several future individuals, they will suffer much air pollution over the years. Disappointed because some aviation industry didn't even recognize the impacts of having lots of carbon emission in the air, they should consider some alternative fuels to lessen the white contrails produces by the jet engines. Air Transportation is part of the industry, we can't stop its operation because they helped several people in terms of air travelling but knowing their responsibilities and
    limitations makes our climate healthy.

It contributes to the warming of our planet more than the emussion of carbon dioxide. It will only get worse as the time passes due to aur traffic. As a inhibitant of planet earth, we should find ways to take care of it. Airplanes and private jets really is a convinient transportation to us. They made things possible as they can transfer hundreds of people from one place to another just by hours of traveling but this has bad effects too to our environment and most likely to our atmosphere. The contrails that makes us amused by its view are too thin to reflect much sunlight but ice crystals inside them can trap heat. These contrails produces more atmospheric warming than carbon dioxide which can cause global warming and can even increase air traffic. They even say that "it would be better to find more efficient fuels that less soot "

Aviation industry has done a lot to make our transportation faster, more efficient and make us comfortable while travelling. It says that airplanes has products that affects our environment. Airplanes produce long contrails during flight as they fly into the sky. The water vapor simply quickly condenses around and from the plane’s exhaust and then it freezes to form cirrus clouds. These white clouds formed can last for minutes or hours. These high-flying contrails are too thin to reflect much sunlight, but ice crystals inside them can trap heat. Unlike low-level clouds that have a net cooling effect, these contrail-formed clouds warm the climate. In some studies it is concluded that the contrails it produces more atmospheric warming the CO2. From this air traffic will get worsen and it will quasdruple in the year 2050.
A lot of researchers are finding a way of how this contrails will not affect the atmosphere. But still it is a complex problem. Some said if we had contrails there wouldn't be global warming. Still the aviation industry must have the knowledge for them to understand and get their impact done.

A lot of people are disagree about this. Because they think that this is insane plan to block our sunshine. And it is dangerous and nothing to do with science or protecting us, but more to do with financially motivated weather control. If the air is not cool or moist enough, the contrails may not form quickly. They just stick around either as tight, white lines in the sky. The climate impact must be largely neglected in the scheme to offset aviation emissions, even though contrail cirrus have contributed more to warming than all carbon dioxide emitted by aircraft since the start of aviation. And the study say that the researchers’ simulation could be overdramatizing the threat of airplane contrails on climate change. However, they do agree that in spite of what the future may hold, take steps to address the impact that condensation trails produced by aircrafts have on the climate. As like

Global Warming is indeed a serious and crucial problem need to be solve, that's why humans are determined to identify and try to eradicate all possible contributor of these phenomena. However the issue about the airplanes' contrail seems to be an exaggeration because the amount the pollution it emits is incomparable than those like land transportation vehicles and burning fossil fuels. Also, airplanes are very important in terms of affordable and long-distance travel. We should not emphasize a small scale CO2 producer that has more contribution than what it emmits, moreover there is no other alternative in airplanes. Focusing on other major issues like building renewable energy plants that will replace fossil fuels and reinforcing the production of electric cars can significantly reduce the global warming.

Though, the message was clear that these emissions harms the climate, even the 90% reduction of these would eventually fail to bring the climate's levels back on 2006 and it would only continue to rise because of aviation regulations failed considerations on climate impact.

Planes actually do help us to get to our destinations faster, but these planes burns more fuels and releases CO2 than we know.

So if one can make a change just to tell these aviation industry and to the world to just think of the alternatives and "get their impacts right" in which we can protect our planet for future generation, we could alter the effects of climate change and eventually win this long battle that we're facing.

It also said the researchers found that air contrails would play a major role in the influence of climate and the even greater effect produced by the CO2 emissions. While these CO2 emissions from aircraft are responsible for around three quarters of all fossil fuels.Such researchers believe that while atmospheric CO2 emissions continue to decline, further work is needed to minimize contrails as well. The reduction of the contrails would have an immediate impact on global warming. Answers to this could include issues such as making air programs at lower elevations and growing new aircraft engines that could either minimize the release of water vapor, or now condense the water into ice that would drop down to the ground.

Aviations have improved the way of travel but on the other hand there's a bad affect to our environment. We can say that air travel is the easiest way of transport, here in the Philippines land transport is the most common yet dangerous way of traveling because of the traffic, accidents, violations, etc. Most filipinos are struggling because of traffic so that most of them choose rhe easiest way of travel which is the airplane. But we don't know that the gas that an airplane produces is not good in our environment CO² or the carbon dioxide is not good especially in our ozone layer. We may think it's the easiest way and the safest way but we don't think of the outcome of it to us and to our environment.

Airplanes produces contrail clouds which is we all know it is produces by planes when they soaring up miles in the sky. This man-made clouds are different to the cluster of clouds which it can trap more heat than the carbon dioxide. Scientists predicted that it can 4x up more in 2050 so the avian industries are must warn about it. That they will should use more efficient gas and model of planes. With the amount of air travel that we have been contributing to the atmosphere, it's important that we know the effects we are imparting when we are doing our regular routines. Even with this particular issue about airplane contrails since one of the main modes of transportation not only of people but also of goods is through air, we should be more aware of the side effects. Once again, I think with further research and importance we can reach the goal of a 15% decrease in the contrail clouds' atmospheric warming effect by decreasing 50% reduction in airplane soot emissions. It's important that we make new discoveries and breakthroughs in this particular issue eventhough it's not contributing as much as manmade CO2 emissions, it's still a problem that we need to tackle and give importance to. Now, that we are at the brink of irreversable change, any breakthrough is considered a victory to a longer earth.

But on the other hand some people critisize them many times because of its seemingly huge environmental impact, particularly from the airplanes' climate-warming carbon emissions.According to some researchers, the most problem is the white contrails that the airplanes paint across the sky. Andrew Gettleman a cloud psycist said that “If all we had were contrails, there wouldn't be global warming.” But, he adds, it’s still important for the aviation industry to understand the science and “get their impact right.”

Some say it can be bad for our planet because it can increase the global warming effect. If we continue using this kind of fuel/material, we should look forward that our world will be affected by global warming because the white contrails are much dangerous and carbonic than the usual CO2. The researchers suggest that to lessen the bad effects, the airlines should use rerouting but it can waste a lot of fuels that can also lead to global warming because of the overflowing CO2. For the solution, we should be mindful of the consequences of our actions and of the things that we do. Flying takes a lot of energy, which means releasing a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. There’s just no way around it, creating the thrust necessary to push a 130,000 pound airplane 35,000 feet above the Earth, keep it there for a couple of hours and then bring it down safely takes a lot of jet fuel. Burning jet fuel releases greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into Earth's atmosphere and oceans. Greenhouse gases block heat from escaping from the atmosphere, causing temperatures to rise just like in a greenhouse. The more carbon dioxide releases, the more heat releases in the atmosphere.

What researchers do know is that high levels of soot lead to more and longer-lived contrail cirrus clouds, which could alter weather and climate at the surface, Burkhardt says.
A 2011 study suggests that the net effect of these contrail clouds contributes more to atmospheric warming than all the carbon dioxide produced by planes since the dawn of aviation.
The study is one of the first to make a detailed prediction of how these special clouds affect the future climate, says DLR cloud physicist Bernd Kärcher, who was a co-author on the 2011 paper.
A more likely scenario, Burkhardt says, is that levels of soot and contrail cirrus clouds will continue to rise.
However, she adds, even a 90% reduction in soot emissions with the help of cleaner aircraft fuels would fail to bring the cloud’s climate impact back to its 2006 levels.

  75. The aviation industry has long been criticized for its large environmental footprint, particularly its climate-warming carbon emissions. White wispy trails across the blue sky on a sunny day are one of the few attractive features of air travel. But they have a darker side, especially at night. For the condensation trails produced by the exhaust from aircraft engines are creating an often-invisible thermal blanket of cloud across the planet. Though lasting for only a short time, these “contrails” have a daily impact on atmospheric temperatures that is greater than that from the accumulated carbon emissions from all aircraft since the Wright Brothers first took to the skies more than a century ago.

More alarming still, researchers warned late last month that efforts by engineers to cut aircraft CO2 emissions by making their engines more fuel-efficient will create more, whiter, and longer-lasting contrails notably in the tropics, where the biggest increases in flights are expected.
In order to have a good environment we should lessen using materials or ingredients that can harm it.

One of these contributors is the aircrafts, they burn huge volume of gasolines at the atmosphere. Example the white trails from the exhaust engine of the aircraft while soaring at the mid-flight it trapped the gas to form like a crystal of cloud. A Boeing 747 carries 150,000 liters for just a 10-hour flight imagine how all airplane can damage the atmosphere. Everyone knows that Airplane is one of the reliable transportation from one country to another. If airplane can cause too much effect to our global warming, goverments of every country or united nations needs to do something about that situation. Since they're leaders of our country they need to put some attention in this kind of scenario because if we still continue to implement this kind of airplane contrail, earth can't protect itself and it can cause global warming. People nowadays can't contribute even though small things in our environment they just don't care about our ecosystem. For me as a student we can contribute by alternative transportation such as Cruise ship. Although it's not fast and comfortable to travel because of unstable current of the sea, we can use this as alternative transportation since airplane cause too much carbon than ships. As of now, Engineers can do something more eco-friendly machines to lessen the pollution in our ecosystem. 100. In my opinion, we can't avoid climate change as time goes by especially when those contrails from airplanes is one of the reason of it. Though those contrails are mesmerizing when saw, it can cause warming of the atmosphere which leads to global warming. Good thing that there's plenty of researchers or scientist wants to annihilate or reduce those contrails released by airplaines. Inventing soot leads for airplaines can reduce its production of contrails. Meaning, the greater the soot leads are, the lesser the airplanes produce the contrails that traps heat and can be another factor why earth is warming.

Nevertheless, it may be a small problem but it will eventually be crucial later on. For today, CO2 (carbon dioxide) is one of the great factor or cause of the earth's warming. On the other hand, we can accept the fact that having those airplanes producing contrails is one of the reason why aviation are striving in our today's life.

We should come up with the idea of having the fuels of airplanes is going to be more organic or helpful for the environment especially from above the sky. It can affect the clouds since we can have acid rains. We should make an airplane where it only burns a few gases so we can minimize the usage of CO2 up in the sky. By that, we can also help minimize the arial traffic.

As a human who is using the planet earth we are bound to protect it , but as we can see right now we are not practically protecting it instead we are destroying it little by little. The Global warming is a word that we are aware of, but are we really planning something from getting out of that point ?. From this article, we can see the reason and causes that the man made clouds do to our planet and they continue to find a way in making a less man made clouds. and at the end of it i think it will release more co2 because of the plane that is burning up some fuels.

The contrails in the sky normally produce by an airplane is properly explained like how the water is simply quickly condenses to soot from the planes exhaust and then it freezes to form cirrus clouds it explains how a contrails in the sky created its easy to understand yet so short but how long does it take? It's said in the paragraph that it can take last for minute to hours and its to thin to reflect the much sun but the ice crystal can trap the heat and unlike some normal clouds formed cloud warmed the climate, the way they explained how a contrails work is perfectly comprehensible but short it allow some of the readers to understand without fully studying it.

However, I am surprised to this article that airplanes can contribute more to global warming than we ever know. 110. The adviation industry has for some time been censured for its huge ecological impression, especially its atmosphere warming carbon outflows. Yet, another investigation proposes that another result of planes—the white contrails they paint over the sky—has a much greater warming impact, one that is set to significantly increase by 2050. Planes make their entrancing contrails as they take off high in the slight, cold air. Water fume rapidly gathers around residue from the plane's fumes and sticks to frame cirrus mists, which can keep going for quite a long time or hours. These high-flying mists are too flimsy to even consider reflecting a lot of daylight, yet ice precious stones inside them can trap heat. Dissimilar to low-level mists that have a net cooling impact, these contrail-shaped mists warm the atmosphere. A recent report recommends that the net impact of these contrail mists contributes more to climatic warming than all the carbon dioxide (CO2) delivered via planes since the beginning of flying. Also, those impacts are anticipated to deteriorate as air traffic—and the subsequent cloud inclusion—builds: A few evaluations recommend worldwide air traffic will fourfold continuously 2050.

But what we do not know is that these contrails that the airplanes are producing can harm our atmosphere and our future climate. They've already proved it by means of statistics and other research. They've also estimated or predicted that if we continue using contrails in the future, in 2050 to be exact from what they estimated, we would have a three fold increase in warming effect in our atmosphere. It could alter the weather, affect temperatures on the surface, and climate at the suface. Research also said that if we tried to reduce soot emissions up to 90%, we would fail to bring back the cloud's climate impact back to ts 2006 levels. But if you were going to ask me about my opinion about this one, I would suggest that we should invent another type of contrail that won't be able to affect our atmosphere that much, or in fact, something that won't even touch or affect our atmosphere at all, and something that is still fascinating to our eyes. The article above thoroughly discussed the issue surrounding the aviation industry and how these eye captivating contrails produced by most of the aircraft today specifically the infamous airplanes affect our climate. The article informed us about on how these long trail of white coloured byproduct produced by airplanes contribute to the atmospheric warming that take effect when this contrail clouds trapped heat in the atmosphere. Paramount in the article discussion is the writer's point of view regarding the inefficient regulation and pollution - reduction plan by aviation industry that failed to consider the climate impact from contrails. These include requires all signatory nations to keep their Carbon dioxide emissions under a certain level and fail to take into account the climate impact from anything other than CO2 emissions.

Although the article above is written from purely liberal perspective it includes very succinct statement and provided evidences that supports the claim. The author of the article was trying to spread an awareness regarding the effect of contrails in our climate and failing to take it into consideration.

The article also mentioned an important proponent, a researcher from 2011, investigated on how contrails cloud affect our climate and could also affect our climate in the future. This was atmospheric physicist Ulrike Burkhardt from the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR’s) Institute for Atmospheric Physics in Wessling, invented a new atmospheric model that gave contrails their own category distinct from naturally occurring clouds. It will allow them to present a specific qualities/characteristics of the artificially created clouds and how they interact with the rest of the atmosphere.

In spite of the fact that these contrails doesn't have a direct effect now on humans from all around the world it would still take time later on to bring significant change in our climate that may impact us humans. Failure to handle these contrails along with the increased in air traffic that caused by the increasing number of planes, levels of soot and contrail cirrus clouds will continue to rise. In addition to that the prediction made by atmospheric physicist Ulrike Burkhardt with the help of her new atmospheric model she found out that there would be a three times increase in warming effect of contrails emissions in the year 2050.

Overall the article was interesting. It provided enough data to present and illustrate the effect of contrails clouds in our climate and spread an awareness about it. Nevertheless it was obvious that the article was written to express one's point of view but it also mentioned enough evidences to support its claim.

Being a student, I want to know more about this particular topic since it can be a "lethal weapon" of science in our society and can affects many aspects of environment in terms of climate change. I am thinking what is the significant factor about the relationship of clouds and climate change if it isn't directly connected with each other. For me, the researchers didn't have the main decision for these contrails because they believed that if we belched that we get their impact right.

Aircrafts like plane and jet helped us to get to our destination faster. However, it has a huge side effect on the atmosphere.During trip as they take off, planes produce white contrails that the planes paint over the sky,it has a effect of the atmosphere warming carbon discharges. One of the specialists from the 2011 examination needed to investigate how contrail mists could influence the atmosphere later on. Alongside partners, barometrical physicist Ulrike Burkhardt from the German Aviation Community's (DLR's) Establishment for Air Material science in Wessling made another environmental model that—just because—gave contrail mists their own class, separate from common mists. That permitted them to display specific characteristics of the humanmade mists that influenced everything from their development to how they communicated with the remainder of the climate. 155. Contrails is a short term for "condensation trails" or it is said to be vapor trails which are line-shaped clouds produced by aircraft engine exhaust or changes in air pressure. Contrails are composed primarily of water in the form of ice crystals.
According to the article above which is based from the studies of different scientists, they said that contrails like naturally occurring clouds may contribute to a warming or cooling effect in the earth's atmosphere.
The carbondioxide emissions from aircraft-in-flight are said to be the best understood element of aviation's total contribution to global warming. The level and effects of carbondioxide emissions are broadly the same regardless of altitude. Gases emitted by aircrafts may add up to the amount of greenhouse gases which may affect the warming of the earth. Although one of the scientists mentioned, compared to the ones emitted by the society, carbon emissions and water vapor produced from aircraft are still less. But then is still contributory to the global warming. This effect was not known by all yet what most of the scientists would like to point out that someday through technological advancement in science, this effect may be lessen if not eradicated.
The article is giving us information that not only society on the earth's surface causes global warming, it is also caused by what we use for air transportation or aircraft.

This white clouds that is coming from the planes helps us keep our atmosphere warm. Unlike low-level clouds that have a net cooling effect, these contrail-formed clouds warm the climate.

I always amazed when i see a jet plane passing through the clouds and make a line but after i read that line of cloud from jet plane was called airplane contrails. This kind of cloud was dangerous because its directly put in the atmosphere and go to the ozone layer that make a hole makes the sun rays enter directly to the earth because this clouds contains CO2, too much of this will destroy the ozone layer but im so glad that there is some researchers make a way to reduce and to solve of this problem to make the future is become better

Those are the white straight clouds we usually see in the sky when private jets and some airplanes are travelling. I can't totally imagine that it's not just a cloud in the sky but it has a huge impact to its surrounding especially when it comes to global warming and climate change. It is absolutely helpful to the environment since it cools the planet surface by reflecting the sun rays by absorbing solar radiation. In spite of it's contribution to the environment, it's still not guaranteed a safe medium in warming the atmosphere because it came from the airplanes. Like what is stated in the article, it needs more fuel so meaning to say as well as the amount of carbon dioxide will increase also and by that in can be the reason why some people might feel dizziness due to the exposure of carbon dioxide. There's also running into my mind that it's quite fascinating how does the researchers predict in 2050 about future air and traffic emissions. Furthermore, I'm impressed and amazed to the proponents of every study because they have an important part in improving and making these contrails more beneficial. I'm also expecting that somehow the inventors can make an aircraft that needs less fuel so that people will be able to be in less carbon dioxide surrounding and at the same time the heat is being trapped because of the contrails.

In the right conditions, airplane contrails can linger in the sky as contrail cirrus -- ice clouds that can trap heat inside the atmosphere. Their climate impact has been largely neglected in schemes to offset aviation emissions, even though contrail cirrus have contributed more to warming than all CO2 emitted by aircraft since the start of aviation. A new Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics study found that the climate impact of contrail cirrus will triple by 2050.

  174. Aviation is one of the fastest-growing fossil fuel consumers, but airplanes produce contrails during flight as they soar high in the thin, cold air. Contrails are the long plumes of exhaust that can be seen in the sky behind airplanes. They consist primarily of water droplets and ice, and are formed when water vapour released from burning jet fuel condenses at higher altitudes. Contrails may stay in the sky for many hours, and can spread two kilometres wide before dispersing. The net effect of these contrails is to trap heat that would otherwise escape from the Earth, which contributes to global warming. Studies have shown that night flights have the strongest warming impact, because during the daytime contrails actually reflect some sunlight away from the earth. Decarbonizing transport would eliminate 26% of UK CO₂ emissions that come from how people get around. At high altitudes, contrails or the white lines we see in the sky are formed in the wake of aircraft. These high altitude clouds are too thin to reflect much sunlight, but the ice crystals inside them can trap heat. Unlike the low-level cloud, which has a net cooling effect, contrails contribute significantly to global warming, effectively boosting the aviation industry’s share of greenhouse gas emissions to around 4.9%. Like regular cirrus clouds, contrai cirrus clouds have two competing effects in climate. They shade us by reflecting incoming sunlight back into space, but they also trap heat radiating from the earth’s surface that cause the warming in the air below. During the day, cooling compensates part of the warming.

Airplanes produce long mesmerizing contrails during flight as they soar high in the thin, cold air. The researchers modeled the effect of global contrail cloud coverage in 2006, a year for which they had accurate aviation data. They found that such a reduction could lead to a 15% decrease in the contrail clouds’ atmospheric warming effect because the researchers looked at another scenario for 2050, one with a 50% reduction in airplane soot emissions. But thanks to various scientists who studied and conducted a research about this contrail clouds we the public are now finallt able to know the effects both good and bad that it brings to our environment. And they briefly explained the multiple possible outcomes that may happen in various scenarios. There were scenarios wherein if not reduced or changed the atmosphere may worsen. There was also a sentence stating that if aircrafts were to change fuel and use more cleaner alternatives the climate may turn back to its once finer state. But all of these were merly assumptions.
